01/06/07: What's on at the Gathering?
Things are moving on quickly and it is great to be able to report that the pre-Gathering programme is looking really good -
The Maclean Genealogy, History and Gaelic Centre at the Aros Hall in Tobermory will be open from 09h30 on the Tuesday to enable visitors to drop in and discuss history or to update the Clan Maclean genealogy database or to ask questions about tracing their ancestors or simply to chat in Gaelic. We will be located close by the registration desk and the Clan Shop.
Over the last week I've been in touch with Tim (our genealogy guru) and we've installed the complete Clan Maclean Genealogy Database on one of my laptops just in case our efforts at getting broadband internet access at the Aros Hall fails. This means we are ensured of access to the database at all times. The plan is to use it as a "look up" reference - those of you bringing your most recent genealogy data will be able to record it down on the laptop and we'll get it off to Tim for uploading to the main database on the website.
And don't forget the three free talks that have been arranged to provide even more "added-value" to the Gathering - each will take place at the Aros Hall starting at 9 p.m. (21h00):
On the Tuesday I will give a talk entitled "A Nation on the Move" and will attempt to separate fact from fiction, romance from reality, and to answer the question of why there are more Macleans overseas than there are in Scotland.
On Wednesday Ian Phillips and Jean Whimp will talk about "Researching your family tree" and share their enthusiasm for finding lost ancestors and understanding who we are based on who we descend from.
On Thursday Nicholas Maclean-Bristol, author of "Warriors and Priests", "Murder Under Trust" and "From Clan to Regiment", will talk about "What is a clan". Maclean-Bristol is the clan's best known historian and author and his books are essential reading for anyone interested in the clan and its origins.
And all week, the Clan Maclean Amateur Radio Society will be broadcasting from upstairs at the Aros Hall to other "hams" around the world - and on Saturday (the Gathering day) they will be broadcasting from Duart Castle itself.
