Reeling

The following is a selection of groups in and around London which provide the opportunity to dance (and learn) reels. All of them provide tuition, and you can turn up by yourself, with a partner or in a group.
  • Little Ship Club
This club meets in St Columba's Church, Pont Street, London SW1, once or twice a month on a Thursday from September until May. Dancing, often to live music, is from 7.30 pm with a break at around 8.45 pm for a 'bring your own' picnic supper. The club provides wine and soft drinks. There is a club table for those who do not come in a group. The evening finishes at about 10.30 pm. Unfamiliar dances are walked through but some reeling experience is necessary. The cost of the evening is £10, which includes the wine and soft drinks, as well as the live music. No booking is necessary. For more information, including the 2013/2014 calendar of events, see here.

  • London Reels
London Reels (formerly Wandsworth Reels) also meets at St Columba's Church, Pont Street, London SW1, once a month from September to May. Doors open at 7.00pm. Reels are taught from 7.00pm - 8.00pm. The remainder of the evening is not taught. The evening ends at 10.30pm. The normal cost of the evening is £7.00 a head, or £6.00 if you wear a kilt or tartan skirt. The Christmas and Summer parties cost £10.00/£9.00. Wine and snacks are included. All profits go to charities. You don't need to bring a partner, and no booking is required. Just turn up! For more information, including the 2013/2014 dates, see here.

  • PGT Reels
PGT Reels meets at St Dionis Church, Parsons Green, London SW6, once or twice a month from September until June. Teaching evenings and social evenings (with no teaching) are kept separate. Each evening starts at 7.30pm and finishes at about 10.30pm. Tickets cost £7.00 at the door and this includes soft drinks and nibbles, with wine on social evenings. For more information, including the 2013/14 programme, see here.

  • Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, London Branch
The Branch runs classes and dances for beginners as well as experienced dancers. It holds regular dances, generally in St Columba's Church in Pont Street, London SW1. In addition, the Branch runs open air dancing sessions on some Saturday afternoons in September. These take place in Kensington Gardens, by the bandstand near the Round Pond; entrance is free.
Please note however that most of the dances taught by RSCDS are not the ones that you will encounter at the Scottish balls in London. Whilst therefore they are great fun, they are not a good preparation for the balls. Also, the RSCDS dances are more expensive than the other events on this page.

For further information, see the Branch website.

Note: the Wimbledon Reels website also lists 11 other RSCDS-affiliated groups and RSCDS branches in London and surrounding areas, which operate in different ways and are well worth a look (see here).

  • The Lansdowne Club
This club, located just off Berkeley Square, London W1, has reeling evenings on the third Wednesday of each month from September through to May. You do not need to be a member of the Club in order to attend, nor do you need to be accompanied by a member. All are welcome. For beginners and novices, there is general teaching and a 'walk through' of some of the more popular reels, starting at 7:00pm. This is followed by a meal at about 7:45pm. Reeling then starts again at about 8:30pm and continues until 10:30pm.

Most of the dances are the popular reels that are danced at the London reeling balls. These are the Eightsome, Foursome, Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, Duke of Perth, Hamilton House, Inverness Country Dance, Machine Without Horses, Mairi's Wedding, Postie's Jig and the Reel of the 51st.

You don't need to come with a partner but you must notify the Club in advance if you wish to attend. There is also a dress code. The cost is £10.00 for members and £12.00 for non-members, which includes the meal, soft drinks and a glass of wine.

For more information, see the Lansdowne Club webpage. Although we have been asked not to include a link to this, it is easy to find. Go to the Club's home page, click on Events in the menu bar across the top, then select Reeling from the menu on the left-hand side.

  • Wimbledon Reels
This group meets every Tuesday throughout the year, from 7.30 pm to 10.00pm, at Trinity Church Hall, Mansel Road, Wimbledon, London SW19 4AA, a newly refurbished building with a sprung floor that is ideal for dancing. People of all standards are welcome. There are MCs who walk through and call the dances.

Each evening costs £5, payable on the door. You can also sign up for a free newsletter. For details of how to subscribe, and for further information about Wimbledon Reels, see their website.

An added attraction of Wimbledon Reels is that you are likely to meet our President, Nicolas Maclean, and his wife Qamar there!

Please note that the above information, including the cost, was correct as at November 2013 but may change. Check the websites for the latest information.
