  Laird of Coll Served heir to his father in May 1790 While in the Argyll Fencibles a John MacDonald, of Hogh in Tiree, negleted to perform some duty, which had been entrusted to him. He was sentanced to be flogged, by Major Hugh Montgomery. As MacDonald was in his company and he knew him from his youth, Captain MacLean went twice to the Major and pleaded with him to forgive MacDonald; but the Major was inexorable. On the day of the punishment MacLean drew his sword and cut MacDonald loose from the whipping post. Major Montgomery challenged MacLean to a duel with swords, the challenge was accepted at once. MacLeans soldiers, fearing for thier leader, sent word to Montgomery that should he kill MacLean, they would shoot him instantly. MacLean appeared on the ground, but Montgomery stayed away. The duel was never fought. He handed over his estates to his eldest son, Hugh, in 1828
