  Came from Inverness. Moved to Falkirk to work at Carron iron works. Hotchkiss family may also haved moved to Falkirk to find work. CARRON IRON FOUNDRY Carron was the first iron foundry in Scotland. It opened in 1760. In 1803 the world's first practical steamship 'The Charlotte Dundas' was launched into the waters of the Forth and Clyde by William Syminton. The engines were manufactured by Carron Company, who had, a few years earlier, provided castings for James Watt as he worked on his steam engine at Bo'ness. CARRON COMPANY GATEHOUSE The Carron Company's first furnace was commissioned in 1760 and by the beginning of the next century Carron Iron Works was one of the largest in Europe with 1000 employees. It was also one of the first integrated works in the sense that it did not require to contract for any of its needs, having local coal mines, a lime manufactory at Limekilns and a rolling and slitting mill near Edinburgh.
