  Wally was named after a challenger of English rule of Scotland in the 13th century, William Wallace. Wallace was a violent youth from Paisley who became involved in the battles with English soldiers in the 'Borders" area of southeast Scotland. In 1297 he became an outlaw after a scuffle with English soldiers in which a girl who helped him escape was killed by the Sheriff of Lanark. Wallace returned to kill the Sheriff, but didn't stop there; soon he had raised enough of an army to drive back the English forces, making him for some months master of southern Scotland. But he wasn't supported by the nobles, who considered him low born, and after being defeated at Falkirk by England's Edward I (the "Hammer of the Scots"), he met his expected fate by being hanged, drawn and quartered in London. Notes by Alice Madge MacIsaac: Wally was born in the Walsh family home in Rhinelander, Wis. His grandfather Patrick Walsh doted on him, as did his mother's four Walsh sisters and brother Will. His father Archie was "working in the woods" near where they lived in Cavour W. Archie and Mollie had met there -- she teaching, and he "working in the woods" nearby with his great friend West Wilson. Wally's godparents were friends of Mollie and Archie named Tony and Mary Sieble.
